NCG Corporate Philanthropy Institute I: Morning Address

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

NCG’s 2010 Corporate Philanthropy Institute (CPI) is underway. Speaker Nora Silver, Director and Adjunct Professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business is now just wrapping up her morning address and taking questions from CPI participants.

Nora spoke this morning on “Future-Oriented Leadership,” giving attendees four qualities that leaders need to make a difference.

      1. Listening: Knowing the context in which you exist, knowing who you are and what you believe and what you bring to the table.

“The thing we’ve stopped doing in helping one another is just flat out listening. To listen to the actual problems. You can’t know how to lead into the future unless you listen.”

      2. Empathy: Being genuinely concerned about others, opening doors for other people, developing people and being fair.

      3. Understanding Organizational Culture: The only thing you do as a leader is ‘manipulate’ organizational culture. Each institution has its own culture.

“One major way to influence culture: who you attract, hire, train and reward them, that’s how you create culture. It’s through the people.”

If you’re gonna lead culture is something you must understand

      4. Doing Business Across Networks and Sectors: Creating social change and impact by collaborating, influencing others—working laterally instead of in silos. Different type of leadership is needed.
