Twitter Thursday: Here’s Who We’re Following

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Yes, it’s Thursday again. If you’re like me that holiday on Monday completely had my days turned around.

But it is Thursday and that means here on the NCG blog we take some time to give some shout outs to the organizations and individuals we follow on Twitter.

And you can always follow NCG on twitter at twitter.com/NorCalGrant.

Here’s Who We’re Following on Twitter

#pkfloods
#pkfloods isn’t a person or an organization or even a proper twitter account.

It’s a conversation thread.

Say again?

In the world of twitter, conversations are marked by a # (hashtag). For example, I also follow the #csr conversation which focuses on corporate social responsibility.

#pkfloods is the conversation thread for tweets about the floods in Pakistan, including news, information on disaster relief and even accounts from on the ground. Here are some of the recent tweets that have shown up on the thread (and the authors of those tweets):

Oxfam: Pakistan floods: Crammed into a tent, Bilhuda’s family is fighting for survival http://bit.ly/cGpt6e #pkfloods

CWS_CROP: Just added over 30 more PICS from #CWS #Pakistan response to #Flickr http://bit.ly/91QFdo #pkfloods

DM_AID: @mpf2011 preparing visit to Nowshera tomorrow with 1000 Hygiene packs for 1000 kids towels, toothbrush, paste, soap, candy etc. #pkfloods

PhotoPhilan
PhotoPhilan is the twitter account of PhotoPhilanthropy, an organization we blogged about earlier this year.

Founded in 2009 by Nancy Farese, who also founded NCG member organization Farese Family Foundation, PhotoPhilanthropy was “created to promote, support and connect photographers to charitable organizations around the world.”

PhotoPhilanthropy’s work is a wonderful reminder of the ability of photographs to tell a story, especially as more grantmakers and nonprofits look for ways to tell their stories of impact.

And here are some of PhotoPhilanthropy’s recent tweets:

Thanks! RT @focus4humanity: Great insight on how to improve your storytelling & How NGOs Use Images from @PhotoPhilan http://bit.ly/bTGzM3

Only 25 days left to get your submission in for our Activist Awards! Avoid the rush and stress and do it now! http://bit.ly/aAu5M2

REDF_SF
REDF_SF of course is none other than NCG member REDF (formerly The Roberts Enterprise Development Fund), a “venture philanthropy organization dedicated to transforming lives through the creation of jobs and economic opportunity.”

It is also very noteworthy to point out that REDF is one of the eleven national recipients of the first annual Social Innovation Fund grant awarded by the Social Innovation Fund.

Here are some of REDF’s recent tweets:

Read & RT Carla’s latest blog post. What do you think the ‘next big thing’ to stimulate job growth will be? http://bit.ly/d1zRCP #socent

In this short video Steve Ramsland, Buckelew Programs’ ED, sums up his experience working with REDF Farber Interns http://bit.ly/a3RXML

Farber Intern Janet Zhou guest posted on Carla’s blog. Discover Janet’s “unexpected findings” from her internship http://bit.ly/aLKULE

TidesCommunity
Tides Community is the twitter avatar of NCG member the Tides Foundation.

Tides uses their twitter feed to help circulate the latest philanthropic news, as well as promote their own news about projects and initiatives.

Here’s a sampling of their twitter activity:

New blog post: How to Develop and Support Leadership that Contributes to Racial Justice http://ow.ly/18VqjC

RT @kivilm LOVE THIS VIDEO. RT @Network4Good: RT @katyaN4G: Fun facts: The US nonprofit sector in a video nutshell http://bit.ly/9JS6Wd
