Responding To Haiti: Disaster Grantmaking Resources

Yesterday afternoon a magnitude 7 earthquake struck just off the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince with devastating effects. According to the International Red Cross a third of Haiti’s 9 million people may need emergency aid.

American Red Cross: The American Red Cross has pledged an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by today’s earthquake in Haiti and they are accepting donations online.

Disaster Relief Agencies: An A to Z listing of disaster relief organizations and links to their respective websites. View the complete list online.

GlobalGiving: GlobalGiving is an online marketplace that connects users to causes and countries, allowing donors to select projects to support. In response to the earthquake in Haiti several relief funds have been established. Visit GlobalGiving online to learn more.

International Medical Corps: Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs. Information on their Emergency Response Fund is available online.

Network for Good: The Network for Good website lists several relief funds and agencies that will provide assistance to the survivors of the quake in Haiti. View their full list of disaster relief organizations online.

Save the Children: Save the Children has worked in Haiti since 1985, primarily in the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the Central Plateau region, providing health, education, protection and food security programs to vulnerable children. With staff there in Haiti, Save the Children is accepting donations to address immediate and long-term needs of children and families affected by the earthquake. United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF): The United Nations Foundation’s humanitarian fund responding to emergencies like the earthquake in Haiti.  Donations can be made online.

World Food Programme: World Food Programme is mobilizing all available resources to bring urgently needed food assistance to the people of Haiti. Learn more about their relief efforts online.

    I’m sure other grantmakers in our region fit this description: not a relief org but developing staged response.

    And I think the middle step would be community foundations pooling individual donors.
